For Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 1.1 and Symantec Ghost 8.3 or later

Ghost includes a utility tool which greatly simplifies the process of moving the Ghost Console.
Note:WARNING: Symantec technical support strongly recommends that you back up the registry before you make any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the keys that are specified. See the document How to make a backup of the Windows registry before proceeding.
To export the Ghost credentials

  1. Log in as administrator on the current Ghost Console computer.
  2. Go to Start > Run and enter cmd then press Enter to open a command prompt.
  3. Change the current working directory to the location of where Ghost is installed, Example :
    .
    cd c:\program files\symantec\ghost\
  4. Type ngserver -export and press Enter
  5. Type exit and press Enter to exit the command prompt.
  6. Run the command "regedit" to launch the Windows Registry Editor.
  7. Navigate to the following key :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\Symantec Ghost\NGServer
  8. Right-click the 'NGServer' key in the left pane and choose Export
  9. Make sure that 'Selected Branch' is selected in the 'Export Range' field, choose a filename, and click OK
  10. Transfer the exported NGServer key to the new computer.

Note: Running the ngserver command with the -export command creates the NGserver registry key and populates it with the internal credentials used by the Ghost console and configuration server. The key will be erased the next time the configuration server is run.

To make a copy of the Ghost Server Database

  1. At the current Ghost Server computer, close the Ghost Console.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
    3. In the Open box, type the following:

    c:\program files\symantec\ghost\ngserver.exe -stop

The drive letter and path might be different on your computer.
  3. Click OK
The Ghost Console service is stopped.
  4. Copy the following files to a safe location (they contain Ghost configuration information):

    SymantecGhost.db (c:\program files\symantec\ghost\db)
    Pubkey.crt (c:\program files\symantec\ghost)
    Privkey.crt (c:\program files\symantec\ghost)

To install the Ghost credentials on the new computer

  1. Log in as administrator on the new computer.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following:

    c:\program files\symantec\ghost\ngserver.exe -stop

The drive letter and path might be different on your computer.
  4. Click OK
The Ghost Console service is stopped.
  5. Load the SymantedGhost.db file from the source machine over the freshly installed file by Copying and replacing it over the existing database file. The existing database file is located by default at :
    c:\program files\symantec\ghost\db
  6. Copy the exported NGServer .REG file to the new computer, and double-click it.
  7. Click Yes to merge the NGServer key into the registry.
  8. Restart the Configuration server service.

This will copy the saved credential information out of the registry key, and then delete it.

Note: The exported NGServer .REG file contains the master key for the database, so it should be erased from both computers or otherwise secured to avoid inadvertant disclosure.
